Sixth Form Building Update - 23 September

Some may have noticed the presence of a rather large crane in the Sixth Form construction site. This crane will be lifting the prefabricated side and roof panels (which arrived by lorry from Austria on Monday) up to the top of the Sixth Form building where they will be assembled to form the third storey. The assembly of the prefabricated building should take about one week, depending on the weather conditions.

The steel frame construction of the Performing Arts building is progressing well and this phase should be completed by the end of this week.

Morrisons 'Let's Grow' Vouchers

Morrisonsvoucher2010

As you may know, this promotion is running again until 31 October. Although Comberton Village College does not propose to use the vouchers itself, for the last two years we have acted as a collection point and all vouchers received were shared among our feeder primary schools who are participating in the promotion.

We intend to run the same service this year so if you have any unwanted vouchers, please put them in the box which will be located outside the general office.

Thank you for your help.

Construction Update - 6 September

On Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Friday of this week the construction of the first floor concrete floors will commence. This will entail pumping about 900 tons of concrete up and on to the metal sheeting forms that are already in place on the first floor. The concrete will be delivered in a constant supply by five lorries continually feeding the pump on the designated days (that’s an lot of concrete!). While the concrete is being laid the constructors will need to use air powered vibrators to level the concrete out and to ensure that no air pockets are trapped in the concrete so there may be some noise in school during this important part of the construction process.

The old concrete reception floor is being removed in order to lay the new storm water drains and this will produce some additional noise in short periods.

The mains water will be turned off on Tuesday 7th September between 3.00 and 5.30 in order to connect up the new water supply but this will only affect CB3 and the Art and Science block at the back of the school.

The Next CVC Musical!

Copacabana

Following the great successes in recent years with ‘Academy of Death’ and ‘Into the Woods’, Audacious Productions is happy to announce that the next school musical at Comberton Village College will be ‘Copacabana’.

“Tony, is working as a pianist in a bar; he meets Lola who wants to make it in show business. Tony is immediately smitten with the beautiful woman. At Manhattan's Copacabana lounge, they both start finding fame. However, fate steps in and she is swept to Havana to work in a splashy night club act where she is convinced she will find her stardom. Instead she finds Rico, a suave gangster who manages the club.”

The show is full of striking music and dazzling dance routines, and will therefore be a joint collaboration between the music and dance departments. Auditions (singing, dancing and acting) will be open to all pupils from years 7-11, and will be held on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 September. Further auditions may be needed to decide upon principal roles.

There will be two afternoon performances for local primary schools on Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 March 2011.

There will be four main evening performances from Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 March 2011.

This promises to be another great show!

Sixth Form Building Work - 21 July 2010

Here are two further photographs of the Sixth Form building site taken on the 21 July 2010 showing the old Reception Area. The old Reception and Community Education hatches can be clearly identified on the left. The building with the temporary green roof is the old Cambridge Building Society office. A substantial programme of heavy building work is scheduled to take place on the site during the summer holidays. This begins today (note the heavy crane) with the imminent arrival on site of large steel panels and structural steelwork. Hover/click over the small images to open photographs to full screen. Schools Food Challenge - Winners!

Cooking_award

On Friday 18 June, Ellen, Laura, Jess and Bethany took part in the Final of the East of England Schools Food Challenge at the Peterborough Showground. We cooked a two course meal under the brief that it must be ‘a traditional British meal’. Our menu was, pork tenderloin with sautéed and roasted seasonal vegetables and a cider reduction, and a trio of desserts consisting of a mini blackcurrant cheesecake, a mini gooseberry crumble with custard and a shortbread stack with clotted cream and raspberries.

We had competed in the preliminary round at the Showground in April, and impressed the judges. From there we were picked out of around eighty teams to compete in the finals along with five other schools. It was a hectic day, as we left Hardwick at 7.45am and started setting up our display at 9.00am. We cooked from 10.30am ‘til 11.15am, cooking on a kitchen stage in front of a large crowd, being harassed by a woman with a microphone and a cameraman. After cooking, we raced back to school in the mini bus to do our GCSE chemistry exam at 1.00pm.

After the exam, we jumped back in the mini bus and sped back to Peterborough showground for the prize-giving. It was intense. Whilst standing by our display, we collected feedback from the judges and waited impatiently for the results. The man took his time delivering the results, and when he announced ‘Comberton Village College!’ we couldn’t believe it. We went up to receive our trophy and were pictured with the chairman of the show. All in all, we are really happy with the outcome, and loved the experience. We await the £500 cheque in the post. We would like to thank Mrs Jones and Alex Bigot, Executive Chef at the Moller Centre in Cambridge for helping us throughout the preparations for the competition.

Grand Piano Appeal: £5740.41

Piano_appeal_posterous

Our new Grand Piano is a great resource for the Performance Hall at Comberton Leisure – all we have to do now is pay for it! The CVC Trust Fund chipped in with the first £1000 and fund members and the music department are busy fundraising for the balance with a series of shows and events. Following recent donations in June and early July, the Appeal is nearing the 36% mark of its £16010 target.

The appeal’s online donation page is on JustGiving at http://www.justgiving.com/CVC-Trust2. You can even choose a specific component to sponsor! Select your component at http://www.combertonvc.org/pdfs/piano_appeal.pdf and then specify the piano part you wish to sponsor in your donation message. The graphic will be updated regularly.
