On Friday 18 June, Ellen, Laura, Jess and Bethany took part in the Final of the East of England Schools Food Challenge at the Peterborough Showground. We cooked a two course meal under the brief that it must be ‘a traditional British meal’. Our menu was, pork tenderloin with sautéed and roasted seasonal vegetables and a cider reduction, and a trio of desserts consisting of a mini blackcurrant cheesecake, a mini gooseberry crumble with custard and a shortbread stack with clotted cream and raspberries.
We had competed in the preliminary round at the Showground in April, and impressed the judges. From there we were picked out of around eighty teams to compete in the finals along with five other schools. It was a hectic day, as we left Hardwick at 7.45am and started setting up our display at 9.00am. We cooked from 10.30am ‘til 11.15am, cooking on a kitchen stage in front of a large crowd, being harassed by a woman with a microphone and a cameraman. After cooking, we raced back to school in the mini bus to do our GCSE chemistry exam at 1.00pm.
After the exam, we jumped back in the mini bus and sped back to Peterborough showground for the prize-giving. It was intense. Whilst standing by our display, we collected feedback from the judges and waited impatiently for the results. The man took his time delivering the results, and when he announced ‘Comberton Village College!’ we couldn’t believe it. We went up to receive our trophy and were pictured with the chairman of the show. All in all, we are really happy with the outcome, and loved the experience. We await the £500 cheque in the post. We would like to thank Mrs Jones and Alex Bigot, Executive Chef at the Moller Centre in Cambridge for helping us throughout the preparations for the competition.
